Curriculum Background
Leadership education must create an environment that facilitates collaboration, analysis of issues, self-awareness, professional skills and capacities, and exploration of new leadership approaches and behaviors (Doherty, 2003).
KMFW acknowledges that our training/workshop (Participatory Educational Workshop: Leadership Development) for racialized/newcomer youth to Canada was informed by our current in-house leadership programs for Black identifying youth and additional strategies from CITY (Creative Institute of Torontoβs Young) Leaders: Building Youth Leadership in Toronto and Multicultural Youth Leadership by SOAR, which provide supplementary context for this training.
Overview of Our Leadership Workshop:
There is a vast need to remove all barriers to leadership development opportunities for Black youth who reside in our region, especially newcomer youth who are English language learners (ELLs). Our work empowers participants to share their perspectives and voices, invest in the discovery and development of leadership skills they can offer to their city and school communities.
KMFW as Guest on People in my Hood: A Philosophical Podcast hosted by MPP Laura Mae Lindo
MPP (Kitchener chapter) Laura Mae Lindo was joined by Irwin Elman, Former Child & Youth Advocate, and our Executive Director at Kind Minds Family Wellness, Ajirioghene Evi-Cobbinah, to discuss the overrepresentation of Black and Indigenous youth in care in the Waterloo Region.
